Komodo National Park, home to the ancient Komodo dragon and one of Indonesia’s most iconic World Heritage Sites, celebrated its 45th anniversary on March 6, 2025. The celebration coincided with four other national parks: Ujung Kulon, Baluran, Mount Gede Pangrango, and Mount Leuser. Global recognition of Komodo National Park continues to grow, especially after UNESCO designated it as both a Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site.
To mark this milestone, a series of events were held—including the launch of a children’s animated film themed around Komodo dragons. The film was supported by Inflores and features beloved characters Waka and Kibo from the Waka Kibo Kids adventure series, created by students of SMK Raden Umar Said Kudus and aired on MentariTV.
Animation Meets Conservation: A Special Waka Kibo Episode
In the special episode titled Waka Kibo Kids & Komodo, the two friends embark on a journey to explore the natural habitat of Komodo dragons. The film not only showcases the stunning tourist sites within Komodo National Park and its surrounding islands, but also educates viewers about the species itself—how to behave responsibly as visitors, how to protect the environment, and how to stay safe. It also shares fascinating insights into the Komodo dragon’s traits and origins.
“Through this short film from the Waka Kibo Kids series, we hope people will gain a deeper understanding of the Komodo dragon’s nature and distribution. That way, both locals and tourists can help preserve its habitat and natural behavior,” said Hendrikus Rani Siga, Head of Komodo National Park.
Agam Amintaha, Principal of SMK Raden Umar Said, expressed pride in the collaboration. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see our students’ work contribute to wildlife and environmental education,” he said.
Education Through Adventure
The film, set in Komodo National Park and nearby islands, is packed with information. “The dialogue between characters is simple and easy to follow, making the message accessible to all ages. It covers everything from how to reach the park to the origin of the Komodo dragon’s name and discovery,” added Ita Sembiring from RUS Animation, who also wrote the script.
The Waka Kibo Kids & Komodo episode aims to be both informative and educational, offering a fresh way to learn about Komodo dragons and the park itself.
